Notes: Aerosmith playing on the "Done With Mirrors" tour. This is the mono soundtrack of a rare video. The sound is from the soundboard, but its totally distorted on the first track, and for about a minute on the second before someone adjusts the sounds. Fun show, Tyler is a great mood, I think he likes saying "Kalamazoo!" and at one point its "Kalamafuckinzoo!" Not perfect sound here, but overall pretty darn good and the really the only board material from this tour that circulates aside from the Worcerster in March of that year and tour rehearsals from Seattle.

AUDIENCE RECORDING

ANOTHER TRADE FROM YEARS AGO, THIS ONE IS NOT THE BEST QUALITY BUT LISTENABLE. A DISTANT AUDIENCE JOB IN WHAT SEEMS TO BE A BOOMY ARENA, NOT MANY OF THE BIG VENUES HAVE GOOD ACOUSTICS. THIS IS HERE AS I HAVE BEEN ASKED FOR MORE AEROSMITH AND THIS ONE IS A BIT DIFFERENT DUE TO ALL THE 'DONE WITH MIRRORS' CUTS PLAYED. WITH THE EXCEPTION OF 'LET THE MUSIC...'I DON'T THINK ANY OF THESE SONGS WERE AIRED AFTER THIS TOUR EVER AGAIN. THE AEROSMITH EXPLOSION WITH 'PERMANENT VACATION' AND 'P.U.M.P.'SAW A LOT OF THESE AND THE EARLIER BACK CATALOGUE BEING MOVED ASIDE FOR
THE NEWER MTV HITS. I THINK THERE ARE SOME GREAT, OFTEN OVERLOOKED TRACKS ON 'DONE WITH MIRRORS' AND 'ROCK AND A HARD PLACE', IT'S JUST THE BAND WASN'T IN THE BEST SHAPE WHEN THEY WERE RELEASED!
LIKE I SAY, NOT GREAT QUALITY BUT WORTH IT FOR THE TRACKS

Notes: The semi-famous show from the Manning Bowl, one of the summer warm up shows for the Done With Mirrors tour which would formally start in January. Seems like a wild crowd here, Tyler admonishing fights in the crowd. Interestingly there is a version of "The Movie" played here before "Same Old Song And Dance," I believe the only known live version. Also "All Your Love " is played, a semi-rarity. The quality here is dicey. You'd think the open air venue would help the sound, but too often it is muffled and uneven, but not altogether unlistenable. I did get this from the dude who recorded it and it's the only audio source I know of, so this is as good as it gets, if that is any solace. There is also about 60 minutes of rough video that was broadcast on local V-66 that exists. Here is some remberence of the show I found on the net....

"In 1985, Aerosmith played a show at The Manning Bowl in Lynn, Massachusetts with Foghat and another Boston band, Farenheit. It was Joe Perry’s birthday. About 20 of us made the trek to Lynn that day. It was a typical, hot, Indian Summer day in New England - perfect for a beer-filled, outdoor show. However, none of us were prepared for the scene when we arrived at the Bowl.
The 20,000-seat, football field was overrun with people, a lot of them bikers and local Lynn thug-types. There was an especially large showing from one of the local motorcycle gangs, called the Rumpot. When Aerosmith finally hit the stage, a couple of 1/2-naked metal chicks decided to push beyond a thick row of bikers. About two minutes later, one of them was dragged back by her hair, covered in blood by the biggest biker I have never wanted to see in my life.
The crowd, hot and agitated by Foghat’s way-too-long set, was surging forward toward the stage. People were being dragged over the stage barrier in various stages of injury and unconsciousness. Nobody was sitting in the stands, and the crowd of about 20,000 were all on the field. I’ll never forget the look of fear on Tyler’s face as he implored the crowd to move back or they would have to stop playing. This rationale only made the crowd angrier and Tyler and the bad boys from Boston pulled the plug after about an hour or so after taking the stage."

ANOTHER ONE FROM MY COLLECTING PAST LANDING FROM THE U.S.A. IN A PAPER SLEEVE!
THE INTERESTING PART OF THIS ON IS IT FEATURES EX-RAINBOW MAN BOBBY RONDINELLI ON DRUMS, IT IS CERTAINLY THE ONLY AEROSMITH SHOW I KNOW OF THAT DOSEN'T HAVE MAINMAN JOEY KRAMER THUMPING THE TUBS!
IT IS ALSO ONE OF THE RARE SHOWS WITH THE RETURN OF BRAD WHITFORD (NAMECHECKED BEFORE 'COME TOGETHER') WHILE JIMMY CRESPO WAS STILL IN THE BAND. I HAVE RESEARCHED THIS AND THINK BRAD HAD REJOINED REPLACING RICK DUFAY AND WAS NOT MERELY GUESTING ON THIS NEW YEAR SHOW. BRAD HAD BEEN PLAYING WITH THE JOE PERRY PROJECT JUST PRIOR TO THE PROPER REFORMATION OF THE ORIGINAL AEROSMITH, BUT BRAD RETURNED TO THE BAND BEFORE JOE.

Notes: Man, what to say about this...you have to hear it to believe it. Oddly, the dude who sent it to me just had it listed as: Ventura 8-3-83 50m, no mentioned of the chaos here. I sent a copy of this show to an esteemed professor pal who wrote these notes...

"Hey, J-J-Jaded!" Let's face it: twenty-first century middle-America loves Aerosmith. Today, the Toxic Twins are clean and lead a great rock (if not corporate) band that plays to sold out houses across the nation. But we shouldn't let today's sleek edition obscure the tightrope which Aerosmith walked and sometimes fell off of during its 1979-1984 period. In particular, this 1983 Rock in a Hard Place show illuminates how erraticially Aerosmith could perform in those days thanks to a steady diet of drugs and booze. To be fair, only Tyler embarrasses himself here, and the band of Crespo, Dufay, Hamilton, and Kramer try to save him from himself by singing for him when he doesn't (No More No More) and by starting songs (Three Mile Smile) or starting solos (Sweet Emotion) when he rambles incoherently, but there efforts are all for naught. Early in the show, a blitzed Tyler tells the California crowd that "I gotta act drunk, otherwise if I don't, I'll get blamed for being something I wasn't." Um, try again, Steven. You are drunk, at minimum, who knows what was in his bloodstream this night.

Other hilarious Tylerisms:

- "California has been our new home ever since Boston, you all know that, doncha?  Well doncha!. . . So when we play here they don't know when we're playing here, back there, anyway...."
- "This song ['Big Ten Inch Record'] happens to be one of [legendary rock promoter] Billy Graham's motherfucking favorite songs. I heard him tell me that last night when I whoomped his ass at ping-pong!"
- "I ain't gonna fuck up on any words tonight," just prior to inventing indecipherable but undeniably unrecognizable lyrics to 'No More No More.'"
- "[You all are saying] what the fuck is wrong with Tyler tonight? He's fuckin' so stoned, he can't do shit. Well, what would you do . . . if you had six inches, had six inches [of blow? smack?] My dick is bigger than six inches!"
- "We ain't like women, you know. Women can cum anytime they want. Boys, you know, it's a two-bit shuffle, you know, doin' it?"

Mercifully, someone in the band makes the executive decision to cut about six songs from the setlist and the show ends after fifty minutes. Tyler departs with a charming "Good night, motherfuckers!" The night before, the band played ninety minutes in Sacramento as headliners with Dio as opener. The crowd reacts to Aerosmith's early departure with a hail of obscenities and jeers, such as "Come on you fucking assholes! Fucking I want my money back! Fuck you!" In sum, the performance here is so bad it is good. Scratch that, it is pure Aerosmithian genius. So let's take Tyler's 2004 advice: "Ladies and Gentlemen, Step Right Up! Let's go see the Elephant!"

Notes: Ah, the old days of Aero on the Rock In A Hard Place tour. Gotta love it...maybe at their most drugged out with Crespo and Dufay helping hold it together just barely and so far removed from what the band morphed into today. Tyler on American Idol, wtf? Not a great recording here, but not that bad either. Captures the vibe of the time, and make no mistake this is a great rock and roll show before corporate America really discovered it and littered the nation with their suburban amphitheaters and $250 tickets. Tape opens with the MC talking about an upcoming Rush show and there is a funny reaction by a crowd member.  Kramer does a litte funky hit of cowbell (?) during the intro of  Three Mile Smile that I've never heard before while Tyler follows with a scat type thing, kinda cool....welcome back to 1983!

Great soundboard recording.  This show is minus Joe Perry on guitars (left in 1979) and has Jimmy Crespo playing in his place.  Jimmy Crespo is an excellent guitarist who was very underrated with his work with Aerosmith during this time.

Notes: A nice recoring of Aerosmith on their "Rocks" tour. This a 2nd gen tape I got from a old tape trader who got it from the fellow who recorded it. I was told the taper went to record another band on the bill, but after about 4 tunes decided he liked Aero and flipped his recorded on. A solid sounding tape, sometimes listed as August 27.

Notes:
Not perfect but very good sounding FM broadcast - kinda sounds like the tuner wasn't perfectly dialed in on the station.
This show was also released on cd by Mongoose records but in inferior quality. The original vinyl has a ninth track, Walk This Way from the Agora Ballrom, Chicago March 23, 1978. I didn't include it here wanting to keep this show filler-free, as well, that show is available in a complete form.
No sound manipulation or alteration was done except an edit was made at the end of side one and beginning of side two to make them run seemless.

This recording sounds
very clean and crisp. Whoever recorded this did
a great job! You won't find 73 Aerosmith sounding
any better than this. It is complete, except for 2 songs,
(tracks 8 and 11 are both officially available as
part of the "Pandora's Box" set collection.)
the numbers of the tracks in this post reflect
the order of all the songs in the concert,
so there is no track 8 or 11 included in here.
I hate having to post (yet another) chopped liver
Aerosmith torrent, but that's how Aerosmith likes
to do things (release bits and chips of shows).
Fortunately the removal of the 2 tracks doesn't
disrupt the recording continuity very much.
This is a very fine sounding recording (either
FM or maybe even pre-FM), broadcast in a small
studio in (suburban) Cincinnati, and it's a fresh
early set with mostly 1st album material (only
album at this time, and it was still fresh to
Aerosmith's small but rapidly growing nation.
They sound like little kids in this show, but
not just any kids. There's no mistaking Steven
Tyler's singing, and this was around the time
I saw them in Dedham High School Auditorium for
$3 gen. admission and they played the 1st album,
not much else and encored about an hour show
with TKAR. That was probably the best Aerosmith
performance I've ever heard. They rocked. never
heard a tape of it though (overly familiar story)
I liked the 2nd album just as much (get your wings)
but the show I saw was an anticlimax, end of a long tour,
the band sounded tired. Queen was great though,
opening that night in 74. Aerosmith sounded very
good here. that 1st album made it big and was the
start of a long ride (in rock and roll terms).
They're more popular now than ever in the mid 70's,
but it was their 1st 3 albums, Aerosmith, Get your
Wings and Toys in the Attic that put Aerosmith
on my turntable. (when I had one that works).
In Boston, this was and is our favorite homegrown
hard rock band (before it started getting a bit
squishy). this show may help explain why that is.
They rocked in this one too like only they do.

03 Write Me 4:13
04 I Ain't Got You 3:56

06 Movin' Out 4:55
07 Walkin' the Dog 3:16
08 Train Kept a Rollin' 5:40
09 Mama Kin 4:21

Comments: Excellent rough sound from original WBCN-FM broadcast. One of the
earliest known concert recordings of the band playing all but one of the tracks
(Make It) from their debut LP which was released at the start of 1973. The
influences of the band are plain to see from the various covers played with
an early rendition of Train which would appear on their next album a year
later. I Ain't Got You and Mother Popcorn taken from this concert were later
to appear on their official Live! Bootleg release.
